바다를 뒤덮은 존재
바다는 지구 표면의 70%를 차지하며, 우리 생명체에게 필수적인 역할을 한다. 그러나 매년 800만 톤 이상의 플라스틱이 바다로 유입되어 해양 환경과 생물 다양성에 심각한 영향을 미치고 있다. 이는 인간 건강에까지 영향을 미친다.
플라스틱은 생산, 사용, 폐기 단계에서 온실가스를 발생시키며 이는 기후변화와도 깊은 연관이 있다.
이러한 문제는 우리의 소비 습관과 플라스틱 폐기에 따른 것이다.
작가는 해양 플라스틱 오염에 대한 인식을 높이기 위해 14년 이상 작업해왔으며, 작품과 더불어 캡션에 플라스틱의 성분, 브랜드, 수거된 위치와 국가에 대한 정보를 제공하여 관객에게 바다에서의 현실을 보여준다.
What Lies Beneath
The ocean covers 70% of the Earth’s surface and plays an essential role for all living organisms. However, with over 8 million tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, it severely impacts marine environments and biodiversity, with consequences extending to human health.
Plastic generates greenhouse gases during its production, use, and disposal phases, deeply intertwining with climate change. These issues stem from our consumption habits and plastic disposal.
The artist has been working for over 14 years to raise awareness about marine plastic pollution. Alongside their artworks, they provide information in captions about the composition of plastics, brands, and the locations and countries where they were collected. This aims to show audiences the reality of the ocean.
STILL (FFS)
로드 하우 섬은 호주와 뉴질랜드 사이의 외딴섬으로, 세계 최대 규모의 붉은발슴새 군락지 중 하나이다.
그러나 플라스틱을 먹이로 착각한 어미 붉은발슴새들이 새끼에게 이를 먹이면서 생태계에 심각한 영향을 미치고 있다.
2019년 4월, 과학자들과 함께 로드 하우 섬에서 뱃속에 가득찬 플라스틱으로 죽어가는 붉은발슴새의 상황을 관찰한 작가는 죽어가는 새들과 플라스틱 오염의 현실을 담은 작업을 진행했다.
작품은 붉은발슴새의 존엄한 죽음과 섬의 아름다운 환경 사이의 모순을 표현하며, 해양 플라스틱 오염에 대한 인식을 높이고 행동을 촉구한다.
STILL (FFS)
Lord Howe Island is a stunning remote location situated between Australia and New Zealand, home to one of the world’s largest colonies of Flesh-Footed Shear-water seabirds. However, the mistaken feeding of plastic by parents Shear-water seabirds. to their chicks is causing serious ecological impacts. In April 2019, after observing the situation of tShear-water seabirds dying from plastic-filled stomachs on Lord Howe Island with scientists, the artist created works depicting the reality of dying birds and plastic pollution. The artwork expresses the contradiction between the dignified death of the Shear-water seabirds and the beautiful environment of the island, aiming to raise awareness of marine plastic pollution and urge action.
