미래의 고고학
몽골의 전통적인 유목 생활은 몽골 역사의 중심이었으나 도시화로 인해 변화하고 있다.
그럼에도 불구하고 몽골의 약 35%는 아직도 유목 생활을 하고 있으나, 기후 변화로 인해 많은 호수와 하천이 사라지고 사막화가 가속화되고 있으며, 전통적인 유목 생활을 위협하고 있다.
작가는 사막화로 인해 변해버린 몽골의 공간을 박물관에 재현된 전시 공간처럼 구현한 뒤 몽골의 유목민과 그들의 가축을 촬영했다.
이 작품은 미래에 몽골의 전통적인 삶이 박물관에서만 마주할 수 있게 될 것을 상상하고 있다.
Futuristic Archaeology
Traditional nomadic life in Mongolia has been central to Mongolian history, but it is undergoing changes due to urbanization. Nonetheless, about 35% of Mongolia still practices nomadic life. However, climate change is causing the disappearance of many lakes and rivers, accelerating desertification, and threatening traditional nomadic life. The artist recreated the spaces of Mongolia transformed by desertification as if they were exhibition spaces in a museum and photographed Mongolian nomads and their livestock. This artwork imagines a future where traditional Mongolian life can only be encountered in museums.
사라져가는 섬의 해변에서
고라마라 섬은 인도 동북부 서벵골 삼각주에 위치한 작은 섬으로, 1960년대 이후 기후변화로 인해 해수면 상승으로 인해 섬의 해안이 계속해서 침식되어 섬의 50% 이상이 물에 잠겼다.
이에 주민의 대다수가 섬을 떠나게 되었고, 인도 정부는 이 섬을 폐쇄하고 주민들을 대피시키는 계획을 세우고 있으나 재정적 지원이나 보장은 없다.
이 비극적인 해안 풍경과 침식에 시달리는 섬 주민들의 초상을 담은 작가는 이를 “인간의 손이 빚어낸 비극적 아름다움”이라고 표현했으며, 언젠가 이들이 터전을 떠나야 할 때 이 섬은 그들의 기억 속에서만 남을 것이라고 말했다.
On the Shore of a Vanishing Island
Goramara Island is a small island located in the northeastern part of India’s West Bengal state. Since the 1960s, due to climate change-induced sea level rise, the island’s coastline has been continuously eroding, with over 50% of the island submerged in water. As a result, the majority of the residents have had to leave the island. The Indian government has planned to close the island and evacuate the residents, but there is no financial support or guarantee provided.
The artist, capturing the tragic coastal scenery and portraits of island residents affected by erosion, described it as “tragic beauty created by human hands.” They mentioned that someday, when these residents have to leave their homeland, the island will only exist in their memories.
